I just had a great conversation with the husband.
I’m going to try making most of my holiday gifts this year (I always give books to the young ones, though, so those would be purchased). I headed to etsy to see what yarn was up for grabs; I managed to find nothing for my gifts, but an abundance of recycled silk & cashmere for me. I indulged in some of Berroco’s Ultra Alpaca for the drop-stitch wrap I made last spring, but otherwise have stuck to pretty ordinary wool and cotton (and plastic bags). Today’s purchases are luxuries at prices I couldn’t pass up, and really beautifully recycled and retwisted from sweaters to boot.
I showed him what I spent; then I showed him how much it cost to buy cashmere brand new. Then I showed him how much it cost to buy 100 yards of qiviut. Frankly, I’m surpirsed qiviut doesn’t knit itself for the price.
Having never heard of qiviut before, he was first befuddled, then dumbfounded, and then wondering if we could raise them.
They don’t look as soft and cuddly as their fiber is supposed to be.
(edit: those beasts are not qiviut, but are musk ox that produce qiviut. I don’t think I made that clear)
